A charming piece of mid-century history and a beautiful example of the art of the silhouette.

This original 1951 hand-cut paper silhouette was created by Laurene Rose Diehl, a professional silhouette artist known as “The Silhouette Lady.” Diehl was an established silhouette artist and author of Scissor Silhouettes, published in 1938.

The portrait depicts a young girl in profile, beautifully rendered in black paper and mounted against a warm ivory background. It is housed in an elegant oval black frame.

One of the most wonderful details is the original paper backing, which identifies the artist as:

Laurene Rose Diehl
“The Silhouette Lady”

The silhouette is also dated 1951.

A lovely piece for a collector of silhouettes, vintage portraiture, or anyone who appreciates objects with a little history and mystery. There’s something especially sweet about imagining the little girl whose likeness was captured nearly 75 years ago, and how this tiny portrait has managed to make its way through the decades.
