A beautiful and wonderfully timeworn example of early 20th-century American pyrography, this long wooden glove box was produced by the Flemish Art Co. and is marked “FLEMISH 682 ART” on the interior.
The box features a charming poppy motif, with large blooming flowers, buds, stems and foliage worked into the wood using the traditional pyrography—or woodburning—technique. The deeply stippled borders provide wonderful texture and contrast to the more delicately rendered floral imagery.
The long, narrow form is characteristic of the glove boxes produced during this era, originally intended for storing women’s gloves and other personal accessories. Today, it would make a beautiful decorative box for jewelry, keepsakes, letters, photographs or other small treasures.
The surface has developed a lovely warm, honey-colored patina over time, with the original woodburned decoration showing varying degrees of wear and fading. Please note that the piece has scratches, surface wear and areas of fading consistent with age and use. The aged character is part of what makes this piece so appealing.
The original metal clasp and hinges remain in place (*one of the four tacks is missing on one hinge*), adding to its antique character.
A wonderful piece of American folk art with a distinctly Arts & Crafts-era feel, and an especially pretty choice for anyone who loves vintage florals, poppies or antique woodwork.
